Angelo State University's Department of Nursing offers an online Family Nurse Practitioner program with two tracks: a Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and a post-Master's certificate. Both programs are nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and have full approval status by the Texas Board of Nursing. Courses are delivered online through primarily asynchronous instruction, using the Blackboard learning management system.
These programs only accept students from Texas, and all clinical hours must also be completed within the state. Both require the completion of 600 clinical hours, with preceptors and clinical sites subject to school approval. Students are required to make three on-campus visits over the course of either program.
Online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) – Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
Angelo State's online MSN program is for BSN-prepared registered nurses who want to pursue an MSN and gain APRN certification in the specialty area of Family Nurse Practitioner. Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program, and have graduated with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Other admission requirements include current RN licensure in the state of Texas, completion of an undergraduate statistics course with a "C" grade or better, U.S. citizenship, and current CPR certification. Students must also submit three references, as well as an essay summarizing their nursing experience and outlining their graduate school objectives.
The MSN program only admits students in the Fall semester and it requires the completion of 49 credit to graduate. Students can attend either full-time or part-time. The full-time option consists of six terms, and takes approximately two years to complete. The part-time program is nine terms, and will take students about three years to complete.
Curriculum in the program is split between MSN core courses and courses specific to the Family Nurse Practitioner program track. MSN core courses include Evidence-Based Practice and Theory for Advanced Nursing, Health Policy and Ethics, Pharmacotherapeutics, Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Health Assessment, and Leadership and Roles in Advanced Nursing. Examples of FNP specialization courses include Advanced Skills for APNs, Family Primary Care (which entails a practicum component), and Mental Health Concepts for Advanced Practice Nurses.
Online Post-Master's Certificate – Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
The online Post-Master's FNP Certificate program at Angelo State is designed for licensed RNs who already possess a Master's of Science in Nursing, and want to pursue APRN certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Applicants must have graduated from an accredited MSN program with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Additionally, they must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Texas, be a U.S. citizen, and have current CPR certification. During the application process, students will also need to submit three references, as well as an essay outlining their nursing experience and goals for the program.
Angelo State's post-Master's Certificate program admits students in the Spring semester. The FNP program track requires 25 credit hours to graduate, however some students may need to complete up to 37 credits based on a gap analysis of their previous MSN coursework. Full-time students can expect to complete the three-term program in about one year, while the part-time option typically takes around five terms, or 20 months.The curriculum in the post-Master's program is entirely focused on FNP specialization coursework.
