University of Cincinnati

The University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing offers CCNE-accredited online Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwifery, and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner MSN programs. All of these programs feature asynchronous instruction that enables students to log in to view course content at any time. At present, the University of Cincinnati only provides full-time courses of study for its online graduate nursing students. Students can start the programs in the Fall, Spring or Summer semesters.

Applicants to the University of Cincinnati’s online MSN programs must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a CCNE or ACEN-accredited institution, and have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher during their undergraduate studies. In addition, some programs require candidates to have one or more years of professional experience in a given field of nursing.

Prospective applicants should note that UC’s online graduate nursing programs do not accept students from District of Columbia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Oregon and Tennessee. In addition, some regions of Ohio and Kentucky also have eligibility restrictions, so students should contact the University of Cincinnati for the most detailed and up-to-date information on regional restrictions for applicants.

The University of Cincinnati’s Online FNP Program

The University of Cincinnati’s online MSN program with a concentration in Family Nurse Practitioner is designed to prepare registered nurses for advanced practice primary care nursing and working with patients across the lifespan. This program is comprised of 50 course credits and 672 clinical hours, which students can complete over the course of 6 terms, or about 24 months. Students’ clinical hours are divided over three practicum courses. This program is fully online and has no required on-campus intensives, though students must travel to fulfill their clinical practicum hours at a local and pre-approved clinical site.

Classes for this program include Advanced Health Assessment, Pharmacology for Advanced Nursing Practice, The Care of Well Women and Children, and Differential Diagnosis for the Advanced Practice Nurse. The program also features seminars during which students must conduct research on and evaluate current nursing practices and their outcomes.

Graduates of the University of Cincinnati’s Family Nurse Practitioner program are eligible to sit for the national certification exams provided by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) for the FNP specialty.

The University of Cincinnati’s Online AG-PCNP Program

The University of Cincinnati’s online MSN program with a concentration in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner is designed to prepare registered nurses to provide primary care services to patients ages 13 and older. This program consists of 44 course credits and 504 clinical practicum hours (divided over three clinical rotations), which students complete over 6 terms of full time study, or about 24 months. This program is fully online, with no required campus visits, though students must travel to fulfill their clinical practicum hours at a local and pre-approved clinical site.

Classes for this program include Biostatistics for Evidence Based Practice, Advanced Physiology, Theoretical Basis for Clinical Reasoning, and Differential Diagnosis for the Advanced Practice Nurse. This program also includes seminars that require students to conduct research and evaluate current nursing practices and how new medical knowledge can improve patient outcomes.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) for the AG-PCNP specialty.

The University of Cincinnati’s Online Nurse Midwifery Program

The University of Cincinnati’s online MSN program with a concentration in Nurse Midwifery aims to prepare registered nurses for a career caring for women throughout their reproductive, menopausal, and post-menopausal years, as well as for infants and their mothers throughout the birthing process. This program is comprised of 57 credits and 784 clinical hours (divided over four clinical practicum courses). Unlike the other online MSN programs, the Nurse Midwifery program requires two on-campus visits.

Classes in this program include Advanced Health Assessment, Advanced Physiology and Pathophysiology, Advanced Reproductive Dynamics, Conceptual Frameworks for Nurse-Midwifery, Primary Care of Episodic Illnesses in Women, Antepartum Care for Nurse-Midwifery, and Intrapartum, Post Partum and Newborn Care for Nurse-Midwifery.

In addition to fulfilling the standard application requirements of a current RN license and a BSN from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0, applicants to this program must have also completed at least one year of maternal and/or child nursing. Registered nurses who complete this program are eligible to sit for the American Midwifery Certification Board’s national certification exam for nurse midwives.

The University of Cincinnati’s Online Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program

The University of Cincinnati’s online MSN program with a concentration in Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner is designed to prepare registered nurses to care for women across the lifespan, during their reproductive, menopausal, and post-menopausal years. This program consists of 48 credits and 672 clinical practicum hours, which students complete over 6 to 7 terms, or approximately 24 months. No campus visits are required for this program, though students must still travel to complete their clinical practicums at a local and pre-approved medical site.

Courses that are a part of this program include Advanced Physiology and Pathophysiology, Advanced Reproductive Dynamics, Pharmacology for Advanced Nursing Practice, Conceptual Frameworks for Women’s Health, Primary Care of Episodic Illnesses in Women, and Women’s Health in a Contemporary Society.

Applicants to this program must hold a current registered nurse license and also have earned a BSN from a CCNE or ACEN-accredited program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. No GRE or standardized test scores are required for this application. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the National Certification Corporation’s certification exam for the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner specialty.
